Medium #RPGaDay2021

Day 9, not to be confused with Sean Plott, finds us at the start of the work week, almost a third of the way through RPGaDay. It’s been a chaotic turn for us so far, but still an enjoyable ride. Today’s prompt we’re taking off the top — Medium.

Here’s an excerpt from the Occult Detective™ Roleplaying Game Play Test Manual:

Medium.

Mediums are psychics who can communicate with the dead.

Abilities: Speak with the Dead

Eyes of the Dead: The Medium can see and speak to dead spirits dwelling in the Otherside so long as the spirits remain within 60 ft of the Medium.

At third level the Medium can call upon the power to see into the Otherside until the start of their next turn. This allows the Medium to view creatures hiding in the Otherside that aren’t necessarily dead, and allows them to see spirits within their line of sight, as opposed to spirits within 60 ft of them. This power can be used once a day.

At sixth level, the Medium can use this ability 3 times a day. At ninth level, they can see into the Otherside at will.

Smell of Death: At second level, the Medium can choose a location that they can see within 60 ft of them. On a successful Boon check (DC 10), they know if a person has died there, how long the person has been dead, and if the person died of natural causes or was murdered.

Summon Spirit: At fourth level, the Medium can use their action to summon the spirit of a dead creature so long as they know the creature’s name or possess the creature’s body. If the spirit being summoned is unwilling, it must make a Boon save (DC 12) or be summoned anyway. When a spirit is successfully summoned, they appear 10 feet away from the Medium, from which point the Medium can deal with the spirit as they see fit.

At sixth level, the DC to resist being summoned by the Medium increases to 15. At eighth level, the DC becomes 18 and the Medium only needs a sample of the creature’s DNA (hair, nails, blood, etc.) in order to summon them. At tenth level the DC to resist being summoned is 20 and once a day, the Medium can force a summoned spirit to make their save with Bad Karma.

Compel Spirit: At sixth level, the Medium can use their action to exert a certain amount of control over the spirit of a dead creature. The spirit must be within 60 ft of the Medium, and can’t be immune to charms. The spirit must make a DC 14 Boon check or be compelled by the Medium. The Medium can choose to banish the compelled spirit, sending it back to the place of its death, or they could force the spirit to truthfully answer 5 of their questions. The spirit has Bad Karma on its save if the Medium possesses a part of the spirits original body. The Medium can use this power 3 times a day.

At eighth level the DC to resist being compelled becomes 18, and the Medium can banish the spirit after it has answered 5 questions, should they choose.

Spiritwrack: At eighth level the Medium can use their action to target the spirit of a dead creature within 60 ft of them. The spirit must make a DC 20 Boon save or be banished to the Nevermore (if the spirit is evil) or the Everafter (if the spirit is good) for 40 days, unable to return until such time has elapsed, though the forces there may keep spirit longer, as the Author chooses. This ability can only be used once a day.

Path of the Dead: At tenth level, the Medium can use their action to spend 1 point of Light and Dark to cross over to the Otherside, taking up to 5 willing people with them. They can return as an action, taking everyone they had brought with them, no matter their location, so long as they have not perished or been claimed by creature of deific power. Instead of the Otherside, the Medium can spend 2 Dark points to make a DC 15 Boon check, traveling to the Nevermore on a success, or they could spend 2 Light points to make a DC 15 Boon check, traveling to the Everafter on a success. The rules for returning remain the same. This ability, no matter where the Medium decides to travel to, can only be used once a day.

One of the Dead: At tenth level, should the Medium perish, they could choose to immediately become a 5th level Ghost, retaining all of their memories and experiences.
