Support #RPGaDay2021

I decided to let chance decide on today’s word prompt. Pulling out my trusty d8, I let it fly across the table where it landed on a 5 which gives us the word Support.

Support can mean many things, such as, as a verb, to bear all or part of the weight of; hold up, or to give assistance to, especially financially; enable to function or act. In its noun form, it signifies a thing that bears the weight of something or keeps it upright. It can also mean, in this fashion, material assistance. And that’s just the tip of the proverbial iceberg.

Support is an oft used word in a myriad of ways.

Let’s address the support that third party publishers give to any number of games. Let’s face it, few companies, not even the top dog on the block, Wizards of the Coast (owned by Hasbro), offer the support many game masters crave, through supplements, adventure paths, miniatures, dice, and the like. As an audience hungry for more and more content, these third parties become the structural support that sees them fed, be it through DMs Guild or other products found on DriveThruRPG and other sources.

While it often feels like the larger publishers are leaving money on the table, it is through third party support that we discover so many great creators who are doing work outside of the traditional publishing venues. And we in turn support them through our purchases and praise.

It’s a tremendously supportive cycle that makes the gaming community a more whole and complete entity. Sure, we don’t always get along. That’s human nature. Thankfully, there is room enough for everyone, and places they can find support and comraderie in, be it through various OSR communities, Critterdoms, Neo-Gamers, or what have you. The RPG community as a whole is alive and well, fracured perhaps, but still out there, supporting one another…
