As the session begins, the Hellblazers are faced with a choice: Do they flee to the shoppe in order to get some much needed rest? Or do they attempt to stop Dagult Neverember’s resurrection. The choice was made for them however. Lord Somerfort created a wall of force while Lord Colville completed the ritual, raising Dagult Neverember from the proverbial grave.

Kelwyn, thinking fast, opens a passwall that allowed them to escape into the street, Tim having informed the group that the “Coldarks” and a lich were coming towards them from below.

frostgiantshamanIn the street, Jone spied an agent of the Winter Court and hurled a firebolt at the man. What followed was yet another brutal battle, as Somerfort and the others glided out into the street, summoning powerful ice magic against the Hellblazers.

None among these Wizards were more terrifying than Soras Daltoran, a Half-Giant Goliath Ice Mage and Enforcer of the Winter Court (which may be the coolest string of words put together since the dawn of time).

When Kelwyn attempted to feeblemind the frozen beast, they were shocked to find the spell repelled by the Ice Wizard, with Kelwyn narrowly avoiding the blast from his own spell. A subsequent magical attack by Akkamas was reversed as well. Daltoran was a force to be reckoned with, without a doubt.

The time to flee, to regroup and restore their drained energies, was at hand — Tim hoofed it back to the shoppe, and the others teleported away thanks to Braxton’s Dimension Door spell. Abraxas left a parting fireball that wounded the Dark Cabal, a minor revenge for the departed Littlecrow, who had been destroyed in the fighting and sent back to hell for a time.

Appearing at the shoppe, the party saw the Blackstaff and a gathering of Force Grey attempting to contain the Sphere of Annihilation that had been thrown into the street by Archibald Havenrest. The sphere was larger than any other and had a strong gravitational pull that threatened everything around it. Thankfully, the Blackstaff kept it contained.

Outside of Dran Enterprises, it seemed Daltoran and the others were ready to follow the Hellblazers, perhaps starting a war in the street, but in the end they were called off by Portentia Dran who bowed to our heroes before following her people back inside.

auspiciaThe Hellblazers , sans Jone, retreated into their shoppe via Kelwyn‘s passwall sceptre only to find the other Dran Sister, Auspicia, waiting on them.

She wanted to know why the Hellblazers had been snooping around her place of business and killing her “Home Security”. The party claimed to have been investigating the murder of Rishaal the Book Wyrm, who it seems was an employee of Auspicia’s.

When told of Dracorus the Red, the murdering thief who had taken Rishaal‘s life, she informed the group that he was a hired assassin and seemed genuinely shocked by his presence at the Book Store. That may have been the only truth that she spoke, for she claimed to have Waterdeep’s best interests at heart and that her dealings with the Winter Court had nothing to do with harming the city.

Auspicia left after that, agreeing that the bloodshed was all a misunderstanding, and that it would be bad for business to go to war with each other.

varjaAs soon as Auspicia was clear of the shoppe, Vajra Safahr, the Blackstaff, entered, informing the Hellblazers that the Sphere of Annihilation had been dealt with. She of course wanted a good explanation, and got…an explanation, with the group claiming Baine Picklebeard had created the Sphere. She didn’t like that one bit, for Picklebeard was one of her old adventuring companions.

Worse still, when the group told her about Rishaal’s murder and about Dracorus, she informed them that Dracorus worked for her. The death of Rishaal had not been part of their deal, only that Dracorus was to gain entrance into the “Dran Archive” and retrieve an item belonging to Auspicia Dran

“Well I suppose there’s no use in keeping my secret any longer,” The Blackstaff said, transforming into something altogether… Abyssal.

roll20 baphomet

It was Baphomet, the Demon Lord. Jone had seen this beast once before, in Xoblob’s Shop long ago. The Demon Lord explained that s/he had been imprisoned on this plane by Auspicia, who used a demon amulet to bind the Goat of Mendes to the material world. Auspicia had been the Demon Lord’s “guest” in The Abyss, and this was her vengeance. Baphomet told them that if they found the amulet underneath Dran Enterprises, s/he would destroy both Dran and the Winter Court, and free the true Blackstaff, who was imprisoned in The Abyss.

The deal was taken, for it seemed to solve many of the group’s problems, and besides they were too weak to say no to a Demon Lord…even though s/he was probably lying.
