The Hellblazers gather at Trollskull Manor in order to discuss their plans for infiltrating Dran Enterprises. Abraxas, during the brief time he had to carry out his own private investigations, revealed that Dran Enterprises has been gathering allies all across the world, with their more important clients being Dorian Neverember and the late Lord Somerfort.
While gathering intel from the Blue Heron House, Abraxas also learned that Dran had an ally in Miranda Heron. It seems it was Dran that acquired the Crown of Winter for Miranda, and that she was, in turn. going to give it to the Winter Court. Additionally, Somerfort had worked for Dran, helping to procure the Crown, and he had felt betrayed by Miranda when Dorian turned on him, eventually burning him to a crisp.
With information pointing to Dorian being an ally of the Winter Court, it seems that Somerfort’s friends were turning against him, perhaps in order to put his son in charge of House Somerfort.
All of that aside, Jone revealed to the group that he had a key to a hidden tunnel underneath Dran Enterprises. The tunnel began at the Book Wyrm’s Treasure, a thought that unsettled Abraxas, who recalled a disturbing vision about the place. The party went anyway and found that the bookstore had been ransacked, and the Book Wyrm himself crucified. Abraxas and Braxton discovered one of the culprits, a red dragonborn named Dracorus, son of Drakonor, son of Drakokus. It seemed he was trying to infiltrate Dran as well, but couldn’t find the hidden passage to it, and when he learned that Abraxas and Braxton knew nothing, he attacked. The dragonborn then passed through the wall and escaped, leaving behind a burning bookstore in his wake.
Jone put out the fire and followed everyone down the secret passage he somehow knew about. Down a stair they went, ending up in an impossibly dark labyrinth. The party crept down the tunnels with extreme care, having to stay close in order to avoid losing each other. This is were Littlecrow and Gunter came into play rather well, with their fast movement speed and darkvision making them excellent scouts.
As the party pressed on, they became much more tense and confused by the tunnels, with Jone losing his way — ending up in a ritual chamber of some sort. A great pool of blood was the center of this area, as he saw a robed man approach and fill a goblet with the strange blood. Jone saw another man nearby, speaking with the robed one. This man, he recognized, was Dagult Neverember, Dorian’s brother and the former Open Lord of Waterdeep. This was the man that embezzled the 500,000 gold pieces from the city’s coffers, and fled after the fact, and now he dabbles with dark sorcery and agents of the Winter Court: Ice Bugbears!
While Jone found this out, Braxton deemed it necessary to charge at a crowd of Ice Bugbears that blocked their path. Chaos ensued as Abraxas used illusions to frighten the bugbears while Akkamas and Tim used sword and steel to beat them back. Kelwyn (who had been left alone in dark) ended the current battle when he summoned an earth elemental to wreak havoc upon the servants of Winter.
Down another dark path, Littlecrow spied many more bugbears converging on their location, as well as a handful of spellcasters. So Abraxas, thinking on his feet, conjured a wall of force, preventing them from being attacked from all angles.
Meanwhile Jone returned to the group, informing them that Dagult Neverember was on his way. The Hellblazers were outnumbered, in spellcasters alone, and they felt the pressure upon them as they prepared for another onslaught.
Then a voice called out, “Guys, what are you doing here?” It was Ziyal, their old friend from another time, and the wife of the current Lord Somerfort in this one. Perhaps they would have a chance to talk their way out of this…
