Faced with a veritable army of drow archers raining arrows down upon them, The Hellblazers sprang into action. Akkamas neutralized them, for a time, by dropping a seventh level fog cloud on the surrounding forest and the party began moving west, upriver, on the trail of Ocasta and the Hand of Vecna.

As the archers began spilling out of the forest, Tim peppered them with arrows of his own, while Braxton, Akkamas, and Jone used eldritch blasts to defend their escape. Kelwyn dropped the heaviest blows upon them by calling down devastating lightning strikes from the heavens.

Meanwhile, Abraxas and his simulacrum, Archon, pressed forward, confronting an approaching band of drow. Archon leveled his own lightning attacks, but when Wilbough screamed out in pain and fell into the river, Abraxas, utilizing his ring of water walking, raced after him, leaving the Hellblazers to continue their fight.

Once the drow were dealt with, the party climbed aboard Tim‘s flying carpet and raced to catch up with Abraxas and Wilbough. This led them into a great cavern, dominated by a deep bay and a spectacular underground city — the notorious Skullport, a renowned hive of scum and villainy.

They docked at the city and were immediately confronted by a guard who demanded a tax on any loot they had wrangled in Undermountain, charging them 100 gold apiece. Abraxas charmed him, allowing them to pass without pay, but when the Watch Commander demanded to see their tokens of payment, they instead gave up a gem worth a thousand gold pieces to pass.

Meanwhile, Jone investigated someone spying on them, discovering it was an occult detective they had crossed paths with before. He too is on the trail of Vecna’s Hand and claims it is on display nearby. Entering the sublevel of the mage tower, Jone sees the hand in the center of the room, in a container filled with a strange liquid. A voice then rings out, “My friend! Hello!” and Jone is reunited with Jace ibn Alhazared who assures him that the Hand is an illusion.

The rest of the party enters the Numb Skull Inn, hoping to get a room so that they can revive the unconscious Wilbough. Once inside, they are met by Jarlaxle, Ocasta‘s hired mercenary. He attempts to barter with them, to convince them to turn away from their quest, but their parley is interrupted when a slender man rises, proclaiming “he” has a problem with the Hellblazers.

As they all turn toward the intruder, the man begins to transform, becoming monstrous in size, as blue scales begin to cover his body and great wings sprout from his back.

This was no man.

It was a blue dragon, ancient and large, rending the roof and walls of the inn as it raised itself to full height. This was the very dragon that the Hellblazers had entered into contract with several months previous.

Angered beyond reason, the dragon demanded to know the whereabouts of the Hand of Vecna and to know why the Hellblazers had failed her.

And thus another chapter in the Hellblazers’ adventures came to a close… How on earth will the Hellblazers get out of this sticky mess? We’ll find out next Thursday.
