Review: Crypts of Winterfell

Ladies and Gentlemen, we have a date. Game of Thrones Season 8 is slotted for an April 14 debut. Out long, grueling nightmare is almost at the end, at least in terms of the small screen adaptation of Martin’s opus.

The teaser, featuring Jon, Sansa, and Arya moving amongst the effigies of Starks Past, is a compelling cryptogram, invoking atmosphere and dread on one hand, and building a feverish anticipation with the other.

Well done, HBO. Well done.

Culminating with their discovery of their own effigies, and the mournful approach of the cold hand of the Night’s King, the teaser is heavy with foreshadowing.

My favorite moment was the feather falling from stone Lyanna’s hand, and its later crystallization. I am reminded of how that feather came to be there, in season one, delivered by Robert Baratheon unto the effigy of the only woman he loved.

We get to hear Lyanna’s voice, and that of Catelyn and Ned. Each a not-so-subtle nod at the weight of Jon’s true heritage and the hard days ahead of them.

April will not get here soon enough.
